The Promised Holy Spirit Helps People No Longer Live in Sin (Isaiah 59)

June 20, 2026

“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants,” says the LORD, “from now and forever.” (Isaiah 59:21, NASB 2020)

This chapter continues to point out the sins committed by God's chosen people. These sins had already produced their consequences:

“But your wrongdoings have caused a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not listen.” (Isaiah 59:2, NASB 2020)

What kind of sins caused God to hide His face from them? If we commit the same sins today, God is still the same God, and He will also hide His face from our prayers.

As a result, we may long for peace, yet peace remains far from us. The very things we fear may come upon us. We may even feel: “Why do unbelievers seem to have more peace than we do?” Such unrest comes from God's curse.

To His people, God listed their sins one by one. These included both their words and their actions. Because they neither spoke nor acted according to God's word, their lives became full of sin. What surprised God even more was that His people could see those around them who needed help and prayer, yet do nothing for them.

“Truth is lacking;

And he who turns away from evil makes himself a prey.

Now the LORD saw,

And it was displeasing in His sight that there was no justice.

And He saw that there was no one,

And was astonished that there was no one to intercede;

Then His own arm brought salvation to Him,

And His righteousness upheld Him.” (Isaiah 59:15–16, NASB 2020)

When someone is astonished by something, it is usually because they consider it a basic and natural response that everyone should have. Yet God was astonished by the  indifference attitude of the people at that time. “He saw that there was no one to save and no one to intercede, and He was astonished!” Their coldness and lack of concern shocked Him.This refers to the indifference of the people at that time, which made God exclaim: " It's really exaggerated!"

When we think about the world today, is it not the same? As we read these verses, we should examine ourselves: Have my actions ever caused God to be astonished? Am I failing to care for those around me? Do I neglect to pray for those who are in need?

The twelve principles of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 are worth reviewing every morning. We can compare ourselves with them one by one, hoping not to become the kind of person whose conduct would astonish God.

Yet human beings are weak, and God knows this. Therefore, as the theme verse of this chapter states (Isaiah 59:21), He promised to give His Spirit—the Holy Spirit.The place where this promise is fulfilled is in Zion, the place where God has established His name. For today, this refers to the saving true church, the "True Jesus Church".

For God said:

“My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants, from now and forever.”

People often sin because they do not know God's word, or because they forget it. Sometimes they know it but are too weak to practice it. The Lord Jesus understands all of this.Through the Holy Spirit that He gives, He empowers us to become those who are born of God. When a person is completely filled with the Holy Spirit, the sinful "self" is put away. The new person that emerges is filled with the Spirit of Jesus and becomes like Jesus.

Jesus does not sin. Likewise, those who are filled with the Holy Spirit cannot continue in sin, “from now and forever.” Amen!

“No one who has been born of God practices sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin continually, because he has been born of God.” (1 John 3:9, NASB 2020)
