For I Am Your Servant (Psalm 143)

“For the sake of Your name, LORD, revive me.

In Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.

And in Your faithfulness, destroy my enemies,

And eliminate all those who afflict my soul,

For I am Your servant.”

(Psalm 143:11–12)

This is a psalm of David’s repentance. In this psalm, David clearly acknowledges that his suffering is the result of sin. Therefore, the problem of sin must first be dealt with, so that he may not come under God’s judgment.

“And do not enter into judgment with Your servant,

For no one living is righteous before You.

For the enemy has persecuted my soul;

He has crushed my life to the ground;

He has made me dwell in dark places, like those who have long been dead.

Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me;

My heart is appalled within me.”

(Psalm 143:2–4)

What draws special attention in this psalm is that when David asks God to forgive his sins and lead him out of distress, he seems to present a reason why God must save him,that is: “for I am Your servant.”

This statement leads us into deep reflection.

Whose servant are you? This is extremely important.

A servant must be helped and protected by his master in order to carry out the master’s mission.

It is like the imperial envoys in ancient times. They represented the emperor and carried out the tasks assigned by him. The imperial sword they bore proved that they were the emperor’s servants. To show disrespect to the envoy was to show disrespect to the emperor himself. Those who offended the king’s servant could even be executed.

The servant of a king was already so honored, how much more the servant of the true God, who created heaven and earth and reigns over the universe. How could God allow His servant to perish? If God could not protect His own servant, would that's just sad?

But then the question is: Who is God’s servant?

On what basis should God help me?

Because I am God’s servant, God must protect His servant and grant him power. God’s servant represents Him and is not to be violated by anyone— even the devil must fear this authority.

“Behold, I have given you authority to walk on snakes and scorpions,

and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.

Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you,

but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”

(Luke 10:19–20)

However, there is a condition to being God’s servant, and that is self-denial.

Without self-denial, one is not worthy to be His servant.

“And He summoned the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them,

‘If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself,

take up his cross, and follow Me.’”

(Mark 8:34)

“And the one who does not take his cross and follow after Me

is not worthy of Me.

The one who has found his life will lose it,

and the one who has lost his life for My sake will find it.

The one who receives you receives Me,

and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

(Matthew 10:38–40)

Self-denial means "the denial of self" accepting only the commands of the Lord Jesus.

At that moment, I belong entirely to the Lord. To receive me is to receive God; to despise me is to despise God.

Thanks be to the Lord!

If we are willing to read the Bible daily and pray continually, because those who do not read the Bible and do not listen to His commands cannot be God’s servants,

when we carefully examine every command of God, strive to obey them, and are willing to submit completely, without a heart full of objections, then we may come before God with confidence in all things and say:

“For I am Your servant!”

For the sake of "His own name", and by His own" righteousness and lovingkindness", He will accomplish all things for us. Amen!

“Let me hear Your faithfulness in the morning, for I trust in You;

Teach me the way in which I should walk,

For to You I lift up my soul.”

(Psalm 143:8)
