Who Is the Book Sealed From? (Isaiah 29)
May 21, 2026
For the LORD has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep,
He has shut your eyes, the prophets;
And He has covered your heads, the seers.
The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed book, which when they give it to the one who is literate, saying, “Please read this,” he will say, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” Then the book will be given to the one who is illiterate, saying, “Please read this.” And he will say, “I cannot read.” (Isaiah 29:10–12, NASB 2020)
The closer it comes to the last days, the more heresies and false teachings about biblical truth appear on the internet. Sometimes just seeing the sensational titles is enough to make people laugh. Without the teaching of the Holy Spirit, the Bible is like a sealed book. The words are plainly written in black and white, and every word can be read, yet the meaning cannot be understood. Even those who have already been baptized into the True Jesus Church, if they become proud in heart, will no longer understand the Bible because the Holy Spirit will not remain with them.
This passage shows that the Bible is not an ordinary book. It is the word of life, and only the Holy Spirit can open its hidden words like a key. If proud people try to interpret Scripture by "their own" methods and understanding, then even if they know Hebrew and Greek well and are highly educated, God will still “pour over you a spirit of deep sleep.” Therefore, they cannot truly understand what they read, and can only interpret carelessly and make guesses. We also often see workers in the church who once should have been powerful, but because of disobedience, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are taken away. They become more and more ignorant. In reality, they have already been “poured over with a spirit of deep sleep,” like people drunk with wine who cannot wake up.
Moreover, “These also reel with wine and stagger from strong drink:
The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink,
They are confused by wine, they stagger from strong drink;
They reel while having visions,
They totter when rendering judgment.” (Isaiah 28:7, NASB 2020) Because God has already “shut your eyes, the prophets; and covered your heads, the seers.” As a result, it is often discovered that the more learned and academically accomplished a person is, the less they understand the Bible. What is the reason?
Then the Lord said,
“Because this people draw near with their words
And honor Me with their lip service,
But they remove their hearts far from Me,
And their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote,
Therefore behold, I will once again deal marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous;
And the wisdom of their wise men will perish,
And the discernment of their discerning men will be concealed.” (Isaiah 29:13–14, NASB 2020) This is the reason why believers cannot understand the Bible: “This people draw near with their words and honor Me with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me.” They always love listening to human opinions rather than loving sound teaching. Their ears itch for pleasing words. What is preached from the pulpit is often merely human research reports rather than the word of life, because people are passionate about “tradition learned by rote.” Therefore, “the wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the discernment of their discerning men will be concealed.” Thus, whether one understands the Bible has nothing to do with intelligence or educational background, but only with whether the Holy Spirit is present.When the Holy Spirit is present:
On that day the deaf will hear words of a book,
And out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of those who are blind will see.
The afflicted also will increase their gladness in the LORD,
And the needy of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 29:18–19, NASB 2020) At that time, even the “deaf” will understand these words, and the “blind” will see the truth out of gloom and darkness. Those who are humble and poor in spirit will receive the gospel of the kingdom of heaven because the Lord said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3, NASB 2020)
I myself also often could not understand the Bible in the past, even though I had read one chapter every day since junior high school. Later, I realized that I could ask God for wisdom. So I began praying silently before reading the Bible and praying again afterward, saying to the Lord Jesus:
“Lord Jesus, please grant me the truth of the Bible, so that I may see the light within Your words.”
Then the verses in the Bible seemed almost to shine. Every sentence felt as though it were speaking to me, saying, “The meaning of this verse is...” As a result, the more I read, the happier I became, and the happier I became, the more I looked forward to every moment of reading the Bible.
“But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase.” (Daniel 12:4, NASB 2020)
And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for these words are concealed and sealed up until the end time. Many will be purged, purified, and refined, but the wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but those who have insight will understand.” (Daniel 12:9–10, NASB 2020)
