Seek And Read (Isaiah 34)
May 26, 2026
“Seek from the book of the LORD, and read:
Not one of these will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.” (Isaiah 34:16, NASB 2020)
This chapter prophesies the scenes of the last days, and also foretells the destruction of Edom. Edom was the descendants of Esau, the lifelong enemy of Israel, the descendants of Jacob. From Elder Lin Yongji’s "Read the Book of Isaiah alive", we can understand that the Edomites symbolize antichrist people, because though they were brothers by blood, they continually slaughtered the Israelites in the cruelest ways. In this chapter, we can see that God’s vengeance is extremely fierce, far surpassing the previous prophecies and judgments against the nations.
At today’s morning prayer session (2026.5.26), led by Preacher Liu Yiyun from the General Assembly, the Bible reading schedule was Esther chapter 8. It mentions how, during the reign of King Ahasuerus, Haman the Agagite devised a plan to annihilate all the Jewish people throughout the 127 provinces of the Persian Empire on the thirteenth day of the month Adar. After Mordecai, the Jew who sat at the king’s gate, prayed to God, God used a series of providential events, and through the hand of a weak woman, Queen Esther, not only saved all the Jewish people from death, but also caused all those belonging to Haman to be destroyed.
Haman, just like the “Edomites,” is also one representation of the antichrist, who will surely appear in the last days. Their goal is to destroy the true church of the last days, causing God’s chosen people to perish, and they will use every possible method. The apostle Paul described them:
“Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.” (Romans 10:1–3, NASB 2020)
Therefore, their characteristic is that they “have a zeal for God,” “but not in accordance with knowledge.” In other words, they study biblical truth very seriously, yet not according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, but through human interpretation and distortion, with the purpose of creating contradictions and causing people to distrust the church, the Five Doctrines, and the Ten Articles of Faith. Concerning such people, God permits a “spirit of deep sleep” (the devil) to enter their hearts, so that they “do not know the righteousness of God, seeking to establish their own righteousness, and do not submit to the righteousness of God.” Among the seven churches in Revelation, the same situation also appeared:
“And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write:
‘The One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this: “I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is; and you hold firmly to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.”’” (Revelation 2:12–13, NASB 2020)
Here it also mentions antichrist people. Their heresies will arise from “where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is.” Moreover, such people often present themselves as zealous in evangelism and preaching, yet what they teach are innovative ideas that are not in accordance with biblical truth. The more zealous they become, the more they become enemies of the cross of Christ.
“Brothers and sisters, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. For there are many, of whom I have often told you, and now tell you even through tears, who walk as enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who have their minds set on earthly things.” (Philippians 3:17–19, NASB 2020)
Paul warned them with tears, because such forces are extremely powerful, and he had already watched many weak brothers and sisters fall one by one.
So what should we do? How can we protect ourselves? Isaiah here says:
“Seek from the book of the LORD, and read;
Not one of these will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.” (Isaiah 34:16, NASB 2020)
The wording here is in the future tense, reminding those at that time who were not accustomed to searching the truth, that from this day forward they must diligently examine and proclaim the commands and prophecies spoken and written by the prophet Isaiah. God’s word is perfect, and the answer is certain; therefore, “not one will be missing.” Since it is complete, it does not need a “mate.” Thus, the meaning of “none will lack its mate” here is:
(The meaning in the Chinese Union Version is somewhat inaccurate in translation. It should be rendered as in the Lü Zhenzhong Version: “None of these will be missing; none needs to call for its companion.”)
When studying the Bible, we must do so with humility, sincerely depending on the Holy Spirit. We must not be proud and arrogant, as though studying the Bible were for displaying one’s own spiritual degree. We must never become like the Pharisees, who studied the Law thoroughly, yet were not sincere. Personally, we must also “seek and read” the truth of the Bible: “seek” means not only reading the Bible, but reading carefully and understanding it clearly; “read” means sharing it with others, giving spiritual food at the proper time, and passing down God’s word in the Bible to our families and children. If we practice this, we can avoid the schemes of the antichrist in the last days, because the antichrist will surely perish.
“For the LORD has a day of vengeance,
A year of recompense for the cause of Zion.” (Isaiah 34:8, NASB 2020)
